Ad creative fatigue: how to spot it and what to do
Creative fatigue is when the same people have seen your ad too often and stop responding. Typical signs are frequency rising while click-through rate falls and cost per result climbs. Rule out tracking, budget and seasonal changes first, then refresh with a genuinely new concept, not just a new colour.
What the signs look like
Look at a single ad or ad set over time, not across different campaigns. The classic pattern has three parts moving together:
- Frequency goes up. The average person sees the ad more times.
- Click-through rate goes down. A smaller share of impressions turns into a click.
- Cost per result goes up. Each enquiry or sale costs more than it did.
See the metrics glossary for the formulas. There is no single frequency number that always means fatigue. Compare against your own earlier results for that ad and audience.
Rule out other causes first
- Tracking. Did a form, pixel or conversion setting break? A sudden drop to zero is usually tracking, not fatigue.
- Budget or bidding changes. A recent edit can reset delivery for a while.
- Seasonality and events. Holidays, weather and local events change demand.
- Competition. More bidders in your market can raise costs without your ad changing.
- Offer or landing page. A page that is slow, broken or out of date lowers results regardless of the ad.
What affects how fast it happens
- Audience size. A small local audience sees the same ad more often, so it tires sooner than a broad one.
- Budget. A higher budget spread over the same audience raises frequency.
- Strength of the idea. A distinctive concept usually holds up longer than a generic one, though no ad lasts forever.
What to do about it
- Add a new concept. A different benefit, objection or offer, not a recoloured version of the old ad. See how many concepts to test.
- Keep the winner running while the new one proves itself. Do not switch everything off at once.
- Change the format. A Story-sized or different layout can feel fresh to the same audience.
- Widen or rotate the audience if it is very small, or cap how often the ad is shown where your platform allows.
- Plan the next refresh in advance. A steady stream of new concepts beats an emergency redesign.
How a creative subscription helps
A monthly batch of new concepts means there is always something ready to replace a tired ad. See the creative subscription.
